Needle Felting in 3D: Beginner and Beyond

Instructor: Andee Graves

8:30-11:30 a.m.

Friday, September 8

Harms Center

Needle felting is a great fiber art for creating sculptural characters. It is a wonderful medium for making everything from Christmas ornaments and toys to art. The possibilities are endless. You’ve always wanted to try it, but maybe those sharp needles have intimidated you? Have you needle-felted flat embellishment pieces, but haven’t tried sculptural work? Come join Andee for a class that will get you creating fun and engaging 3D characters and critters with confidence. In this class, you’ll learn everything you need to know to use your felting needle safely and ergonomically; how to create different shapes from loose fiber and join them together to make an object that can stand up; using “frames” to create the base of your 3D pieces; how to make both “hard” and “soft” felt; and embellishing your sculpture with yarn, beads, and fabric. You’ll go home with a full color booklet of how-to’s, your own felting needle and a bag full of fiber to practice with.

Andee Graves is a crochet designer, writer, teacher and artist living in the mountains of Colorado with her husband, two sons and an evolving menagerie of 4-legged friends. She combines a life-long passion for crocheting, sewing, and crafting with a strong interest in mathematics. She is endlessly intrigued by the “magic” of creating fabric or an object from nothing but fiber or string using a hook or needle, and invites you to join her in a class to expand your own creative and crafting journey. Andee has taught crochet, crafting and injury prevention classes to students of all ages. Her teaching has included classes and private lessons at her local yarn shop and elementary school, as well as at the national Knit and Crochet Show/CGOA conferences. She loves the versatility of crochet and enjoys designing projects that are entertaining to work up. She is passionate about passing on the crochet techniques that she has learned and teaching others the love of working with yarn and hook. She has always enjoyed crafting sculptural pieces using crochet, needle-felting and wire work. She is excited to bring some needle-felting classes to the Scotts Bluff Valley Fiber Arts Fair this year. Her motto is: Don’t Fear the Needle. Andee writes about crochet techniques, designing, and healthy crafting practices for her blog and other publications. Her articles and designs have been published in Interweave Crochet, Crochet World, Crochet! Magazine,,,, and Crochet 1-2-3. She started her independent pattern line M2H Designs in Fall 2010 with a focus on creating “teaching” patterns that include tutorials for techniques that are used in the pattern.
