Brazilian Embroidery-Flowers, Butterflies, and Beads


Class Description: Iridescent rayon EdMar Threads, Seed Beads and 7 familiar embroidery stitches are combined in a petite Brazilian Embroidery Floral design that will offer an introduction to Dimensional Brazilian Embroidery and the application of seed beads that may be used for quilting, clothing embellishment, and other types of needlework. Students will learn how to work with 3 weights of rayon threads, the characteristic differences between rayon and cotton threads and how to firmly attach seed beads to the design. The design will then be mounted in a Flexi-Hoop for stitching. A professional, drum tight backing will complete the project.

Skill Level: No experience necessary

Maximum Class Size: 15

Students to Bring: Scissors, water soluble pen or pencil (not air drying), and writing materials to take notes.

Materials Fee: $10.00 (includes fabric for practice and project, EdMar rayon threads-3 weights/4 colors-, two needles-embroidery and beading), sed beads and thread, a 2 ½” x 3 ½” Flexi-Hoop and printed/illustrated instructions)

Donna Friebertshauser, A Needle and Fiber Arts professor emeritus from Coastline College in California, now resides and teaches in Bayard, NE.

Her publications include the book All About Trapunto, numerous designs and articles for multiple needlework magazines and books. She also has written a series of diversified needle techniques and design books.

Her needlework experience includes: Co-designer/judge of the EGA Counted Thread Master Craftsman program, Co-designer/Academic Consutlant for an Emmy-awarded Needlecraft telecourse and Designer/Lecturer for multiple needlework companies. She has also taught local, regional and national seminars for EGA, Pomegranate Guilds, Smocking Guilds, Needlepoint, TNNA, HIA, and Princess Lines.

In addition to needlework she has received a national teaching award, community service awards (2) from Ford Motor Company, United Way, Honorary Life Memberships from Girls Club of America, California PTA, Costa Mesa Art League, Artist in Residence for an Art School in Mississippi, Orange County Fair (13 years as Supervisor of the California Crafts Department), Academic Senate and Department of Visual and Performing Arts Distinguished Service Awards from Coastline College.

Some of Donna’s 2010 classes include the Spring International Quilt Market (Minneapolis, MN), Curtis Spring Fling Quilter’s Retreat (Curtis, NE), QuiltNebraska 2010 (North Platte, NE), and Fall International Quilt Market (Houston, TX).
